All Change

I’m flighty at the best of times, but this time of year always makes my feet extra itchy. Flowers are in bloom, the sun is shining, the sky is blue, the air is fresh and clean, and life feels brimful of possibility again after the long, dark days of the winter months. The last thing I want to do is sit at my desk while everyone else cavorts around outside – literally – there is a huge park directly opposite my office and it is simply cruel to be made to sit and watch people sunbathing/playing frisbee/having a picnic while I have to slave away inside! However, as much as I would like to stomp around on top of my in tray, declaring my intention to run out of the door and never come back to my colleagues while throwing armfuls of daffodils into the air, I do need my job in order to pay for my life. As such, I must be content with making smaller changes for now!

As you’ll notice, I have changed the appearance of the blog to give it a little bit of a fresher look, and I’m going to tinker around in the background to amend the way I categorise things over the next few days too. This will hopefully make it easier to find posts about specific topics, and find reviews that are relevant to the subject you’re interested in. So look out for that. I have also added a new page called ‘Bibliotherapy’. I would love to start a new series of semi regular posts answering people’s requests for book suggestions to suit their circumstances. Books can be such a wonderful source of inspiration, encouragement and edification; to help people choose the right book to lift their spirits and get them on the right path to a more positive future would be brilliant. I can only do these posts if people choose to take me up on my offer, though, so do write in with your bibliotherapy needs, and encourage people you know to write in too! I am really hoping that it will take off and be an interesting and thought provoking new addition.

I’ve been reading books about WWI for a little while now and I must admit I am feeling in need of a change of theme. I’m enjoying Siegfriend Sassoon’s Memoirs of a Fox Hunting Man, but that’s probably because we’re still fox hunting and not fighting. As such I’ve picked out my next five reads; I did say I wanted to read Villette and I still do, but I can’t find my copy so that’s on hold until I’ve rummaged in my mum’s attic and uncovered it. I want to re-read Illyrian Spring, which is one of my all time favourites, and I also want to revisit Pride and Prejudice – it just feels like spring to me. The other three are books I’ve been meaning to get to for a while; Excellent Women, which a lot of people have promised I will love; The Solitary Summer, which is the follow up to the beautiful and life affirming Elizabeth and Her German Garden and Farewell Leicester Square, a Persephone I received for Christmas and am intrigued to delve into.

Something that always makes me feel sprightlier is revamping my wardrobe. By the end of the winter I’m always thoroughly fed up with my clothes – I’m sure many of my female readers will understand that feeling of being utterly bored with everything you own after months of recycling the same outfits! Dressing for the changeable spring weather is also a nightmare and most days this time of year I step out of my flat in the morning and instantly know that I’ve totally got it wrong and am going to spend the day either sweating or shivering. So, to combat this feeling of wardrobe malaise, I have invested in some pink jeans, a lovely colourful printed scarf and a royal blue blazer (not pictured) that means I can finally pack away my coat. Now I can leave the house with a spring in my step and a smile on my face rather than feeling like a slob who has no idea how to dress. Always a good feeling!

Finally, by the end of the month I hope to get the news I’ve been waiting for as to whether it will be ‘all change’ for me once again in September. A new career could be beckoning…I very much hope so! Keep those fingers crossed for me please!!

I always have my fingers crossed for you, my dear! Always always. Revamping a wardrobe is a lovely thing to do — just buying a single versatile new garment can make me feel like a new woman. (Dresses are best. Dresses are amazing.)

    1. bookssnob says:

oh Jenny! I miss you! Oh yes – I haven’t bought a new dress in quite a while actually!! About time I did! 🙂

      1. Jenny says:

I miss you too! Come back and visit!

      2. bookssnob says:

I want to! Hopefully soon! 🙂

  3. Hurrah for Spring! I’m trying to get spring clothes together… lots of thrifting going on at my house. Your book choices are lovely…. I KNOW you will love Excellent Women!

    1. bookssnob says:

Spring is such a joy! Getting a new wardrobe together is always fun! 🙂 Thanks – I am really looking forward to reading Excellent Women!

I always get itchy feet in springtime too. It’s the slowest time at my office, so I always take a vacation in April, but the days between my choosing the days and actually going seem interminable. I have two and a half weeks to go now, and it feels like too much!

And I was just thinking this morning that I’m in desperate need of a wardrobe refreshening. For some reason, I’ve been good about buying a few new really nice things each winter, but it’s been ages since I really updated my spring clothes. I think one of my vacation days will be a shopping day 🙂

    1. bookssnob says:

Oh Teresa! At least you have a holiday to look forward to – but I know that feeling of waiting to just go, go, go!!

Oh yes – a shopping day is a must! Every lady needs a beautiful piece or two for spring, to give her a bounce in her step! 🙂

  5. What a wonderful idea for Bibliotherapy. I’ll be heading on over to check it out, Rachel. I love your daffodils, your new “duds”, and, of course, that pile of books.
It’s such a wonderful feeling we get come springtime, isn’t it? All that hope that has been bottled up all winter. Well, part of my hope is that your dreams for a new career and all that entails happens. Best wishes.

    1. bookssnob says:

Thanks Penny! Glad you like the idea of it! 🙂

Indeed it is – that is a perfect description! I feel like I’ve had my wings clipped all winter and now I can fly again!

Thank you so much Penny – your support means a lot to me! 🙂

Hmmm….I like your Bibliotherapy offer. I am having a little work crisis at the moment and I’m thinking the right book would help me solve it 🙂 I’m reading Excellent Women at the moment and I love it. It is so funny and I absolutely adore Mildred Lathbury – she’s become a heroine of mine.

    1. bookssnob says:

Oh no Anbolyn! Hope that work crisis gets solved quickly for you. Feel free to email me your bibliotherapy request! 🙂

Oh I’m so glad to hear that! I can’t wait to read it now!

I like the new layout of the blog but the font is pretty small. Of course it is end of the day and my contacts are still in, drier than brittle leaves on my eyeballs.

I started “Villette” late last year but got sidetracked and put it down. I thought it would be easy to get into because I adore “Jane Eyre” but I had a hard tie with it. Perhaps I should give it another go.

    1. bookssnob says:

I’ll see what I can do about the font size!

Villette is pretty heavy going – it’s certainly not got the feel good factor of Jane Eyre. However, it’s a much ‘better’ book in many ways – beautifully, poignantly written, and so ahead of its time – and absolutely worth pushing yourself to finish because you’ll be incredibly glad you did!

  8. Mystica says:

I’ve read Excellent Women and Elizabeth and found them both excellent. I do hope that whatever you wish for is going to come true.

    1. bookssnob says:

So many wonderful recommendations! Looks like I have a fun reading month ahead 🙂

      Thank you very much, Mystica!

I too bought some pink jeans, mine are bright pink, for cold spring & summer days but not to be dressed in winter clothes. I’m on the look out for a new scarf but I keep falling for ones that are just too expensive. So hope you hear soon about next year.

    1. bookssnob says:

Oh lovely – I can just see you in those! I got my scarf from Oliver Bonas and they had some lovely ones in there. About £16 each so not bad!

  10. Jo says:

I also like the fresh spring like blog look. Instantly made me brighter, and then you add in the daffs and voila! I am sold. My favourite flower, guaranteed to brighten anyone’s day.

It is that time of year when we change things around a bit. I have got as far as a more spring like, light handbag (covered in pictures of cupcakes!). I have been vigorously cleaning, and sorting and now my next aim is to rebook at my clothes. You have inspired me to look at the blog as well. But one thing at a time and clothes are slightly necessary!

    1. bookssnob says:

Thanks Jo! Glad it meets with your approval!

Your handbag sounds lovely, and so does cleaning and sorting – there’s nothing better than a good spring clean to make you feel all ready for a new start, is there?! Get yourself a new wardrobe, definitely – clothes must always take priority! 🙂

  11. Elke says:

I love ‘Solitary Summer’. It’s just as wonderful as the first book. And perfect to read in spring.

I don’t have any bibliotherapy needs at the moment as my life seems to be in sync with the books I’m reading (or vice versa) but I will definitely keep it in mind. And I love the idea, by the way.

I’m also crossing my fingers that you’ll get good news for September.

    1. bookssnob says:

I’m glad to hear that Elke, and that you’re enjoying your reading at the moment!! It’s always lovely when life and books are in sync! 🙂

      Thank you very much! 🙂

  12. What a lovely post! Your new clothes are so pretty and perfect for Spring. Love your reading pile too. Good luck with the teaching – I am starting a PGCE in September so following a similar route. I’m sure you will hear good news!

    1. bookssnob says:

Thanks Miranda! Yes Claire told me about that – how exciting for you and congratulations! I hope I’ll be in the same boat before long! 🙂

  13. Lucy says:

Your new blog look feels very ladylike, Rachel 😉

I know exactly how you feel about the clothes conundrum! I’m so tired of wearing (mostly black/grey) winter clothes and I’m yearning for freshness and lightness and colour, but the weather’s still a bit up and down here. I’m looking forward to wearing skirts again 🙂 Those pink jeans are lovely, and so perfect for spring!

I’ve got my fingers crossed for you! 🙂

    1. bookssnob says:

Thanks Lucy! That was the look I was going for! 🙂

I hope you get to cast off the grey and black soon…wishing you warmer weather and skirts!!

      Thank you very much! 🙂

  14. Lucy says:

Great post! Your life mirrors mine at the moment… On the desperate search for a new career…bought flipflops last week and then it snowed yesterday…watching people galavanting past my office window …it’s all very confusing!! 🙂

    1. bookssnob says:

Yes, new career searching is incredibly difficult, isn’t it?! I wish you much success at finding what you want to do. I think it might actually be harder knowing what you want but finding it tricky to get into it…it’s so frustrating sometimes!! Spring is a confusing time, all round, really…I must say I will be glad when the weather decides what it’s doing! 🙂

  15. Frankie Moore says:

Love the new look; it’s lovely; all I need now is to be able to write as well as you do! Happy Easter!

    1. bookssnob says:

Thanks Frankie, that’s very kind of you to say! 🙂 Happy Easter to you too!

  16. bigmaxy says:

Liking the new look and feel to your blog.

    1. bookssnob says:

Thank you very much – it’s always good to shake things up sometimes!

“Months of recycling the same outfits” – I’ve been recycling the same clothes for years, but then I am a man!

    1. bookssnob says:

Men don’t get tired of their clothes as quickly as women David, I’m sure of it! 🙂

  18. Nicola says:

Yay to those pink jeans! Yes I fancy a re-read of P&P, too.

    1. bookssnob says:

Thanks Nicola! Great – would be wonderful to have you join in the discussion! 🙂
